How to Change Scentsy Wax: Quick and Easy Methods

Switching Scents Is Simple
Ready for a new scent? Changing the wax in your Scentsy warmer takes just a few minutes. There are three popular methods, and each one works great — choose whichever fits your style.
Method 1: Cotton Ball Soak (Most Popular)
- Turn your warmer on and wait for the wax to fully melt (about 10 minutes)
- Drop 2-3 cotton balls into the melted wax
- Wait 30-60 seconds for the cotton balls to absorb the liquid wax
- Remove the saturated cotton balls and discard them in the trash
- Wipe the dish with a clean paper towel
- Add your new wax cubes and enjoy the fresh scent
This is the cleanest, easiest method. Most Scentsy fans swear by it.
Method 2: Pour It Out
- Turn the warmer on until the wax is fully melted
- Carefully pour the melted wax into a lined trash can (use paper towels or newspaper as liner)
- Wipe the dish clean with a paper towel
- Add new wax
Faster than the cotton ball method, but slightly more risk of drips. Hold a paper towel under the dish as you pour for a clean transfer.
Method 3: Freeze and Pop
- Turn off the warmer and let the wax harden completely
- If your dish is removable, pop it off and place it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes
- The frozen wax shrinks slightly and pops right out — often in one clean piece
- Wipe the dish and add new wax
This method is great if you have a removable dish. If your dish isn't removable, you can use a butter knife to gently pry the frozen wax disc out (be careful not to scratch the dish).
How Often Should You Change the Wax?
Change your wax when you can no longer smell the fragrance. The wax stays in the dish but the scent oils evaporate over time. For most people, this is every 2-4 days of regular use. If you use your warmer 8+ hours daily, you might swap every 2 days.
Pro Tips
- Don't add new wax on top of old: Old, unscented wax dilutes the new fragrance. Always clean first.
- Save pretty wax pieces: If you use the freeze method, the popped-out wax discs can be remelted later if they still have some scent left.
- Keep cotton balls near your warmer: Having them on hand makes switching scents a 2-minute task.
- Never pour wax down the drain: It solidifies in pipes and causes expensive clogs.
Once you've done it a couple of times, changing Scentsy wax becomes second nature. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes, and the reward is a fresh burst of your next favorite fragrance.
